Cathedral of the Sea by Ildefonso Falcones

Basic Plot

A masterful epic of love, war, treason, plague, famine, witchcraft, anti-Semitism and the Inquisition 14th-century Spain, the medieval city of Barcelona is enjoying a golden age of prosperity. Its humblest inhabitants are building, stone by stone, a magnificent church to overlook their harbour. This is the Cathedral of the Sea: a church to be built for the people by the people. In its shadow, Arnau, a young serf on the run from his feudal lord, struggles to earn his freedom. After famine, plague and thwarted love, Arnau's fortunes begin to turn when King Pedro makes him a baron as a reward for his courage in battle. But he is also forced to marry Eleonor, a ward of the King whom he does not love. His newfound status excites jealousy from his friends who plot his downfall with devastating consequences. Arnau's journey from slave to nobleman is the story of a struggle between good and evil that will turn Church against State and brother against brother ... (source)

My review (on Visual Bookshelf)

One of the best books I've read recently. At the end of the first chapter I was shocked, at the end of the second I was in tears. Somewhat slow in the middle but to be expected from historical fiction. The original Spanish version must be amazing.. ¿cualquiera habla espaƱol? 4.5/5

buku ni berapa page?

how long actually you took to finish a chapter?a book?

what is ur advice to somebody like me who just cannot find time to read buku tebal2 camni?

Hidayah Ismawi said...

abangsahar: this is one of the thicker novels.. tapi taklah sgt2 tebal..

it depends on the book .. usually .. uniterrupted, I can finish an average length book in around 4-5 hours.. but nowadays I take ..on average 1- 1 and a half weeks per book coz I only get to read while waiting for stuff.. (like car wash, or late friends- so that's why I always carry a book in my handbag)

advice? hmm.. nak cari masa ..mmg takde .. not really.. there is always something more important to do.. but that's ok.. just read whenever u can.. and because u want to .. not coz u have to.. zaman terpaksa baca buku teks tebal2 sudah berlalu kan? plus it helps if u read stuff that interests u ..

would be happy to lend u any of the books here :)..just send details to e-mail add (
